John Newton is best known for writing the hymn “Amazing Grace.” In its familiar first verse, he testified that grace “saved a wretch like me.” Another verse of the hymn details Newton’s awareness that conversion was just the beginning of transformation, not the end:

Through many dangers, toils, and snares,

I have already come;

’Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,

And grace ’twill lead me home.

John Newton was a man in process. Are you a man or woman in process? The truth that we are learning here from Romans 6:3–5 is that the power of sin is broken in us. We are free to choose what we do; in Christ we are dead to sin! Why? Because God’s grace demands it, and Christ’s victory assures it.
