Chapter Eight

What the hell had he done?

Flex parked in the snowy pasture next to Stryker’s truck and kicked himself for the hundredth time since they’d left his house.

They’d picked up burgers in town and had headed straight to the Rengold Ranch. Already the parking pasture was filling up with trucks, but they had half an hour more before the first event.

Flex cast a quick glance at Kelli as everyone piled out. “Do you need help with those?”

“Oh, no, I’ve got them.” Kelli pushed open the door and cradled the bags of burgers closer to her. “Thank you though.” She got out and let the door swing closed, and then it was just him in the truck.

He’d fucked it all up.

Flex ran his hand down his jaw and looked in the rearview mirror, where the Pack was lowering his and Stryker’s tailgates to sit and eat their dinners. Ever since he’d pulled away from Kelli, he’d had this sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. A good man didn’t fool around with a girl and enjoy her body, and then remind her that they were just friends. That’s not how that was supposed to work, and he knew Kelli felt it. The smile had fallen from her lips and had returned reserved, and forced.

She was a Kash. Why the hell couldn’t he leave those Kash girls alone? He wanted nothing to do with her damn sister or family, and he was what? Fucking around with her and getting himself addicted for what? Because she was off-limits? Because she was a bad idea?

His wolf was so messed up.

The worst of it though…the very worst part of this was the idea that he would hurt Kelli. She absolutely had the potential to hurt him. They were two comets hurtling toward each other, and he had to change their path.

He didn’t want anything to do with these growing feelings inside of him, because feelings like this led to pain. He’d learned that the hard way.

Vaughn gripped her waist and helped her sit up on the tailgate, and a snarl rattled Flex’s throat.

“Stop,” he growled. “She isn’t yours.”

The wolf in him was growing protective for no damn good reason.

Tomorrow, his life needed to go back to normal.

Flex pushed open his door and was met by frigid wind and fat, slow-falling snowflakes. The scent of animals hit his senses, and the wolf perked up, but they weren’t here to hunt. It was just the bulls and horses for the Snowdeo. He grabbed his thick canvas jacket out of the back, and a baseball cap to keep the snow off his face.

He shrugged into his coat and caught a wrapped burger that Vaughn tossed him. The wary man in him said to eat his dinner leaning on the bed of his truck, near the back wheel, on the opposite side of Kelli, but the part of him that still could taste her kiss on his lips urged him to walk straight over to her, bump her on the shoulder, and give her a wink before he began eating beside her.
