“Well that sounds nice,” he said, one arm crossed on his chest, not looking at her but past her, around her, over her head.

Headie thought about telling him the secret that would crack him, right there in the street: she held the beginning of the tiniest blue-eyed baby inside her.

She looked up at him. He was smiling at the world and the sky and everyone in town but her. She could not catch his eye. She did not say anything.

She wondered how many women there were who knew him like she did.

“Well then,” Allen said, putting out his cigarette in the outside ashtray, then holding the Goldstein and Goldstein door like he was letting someone out or helping someone in. “Good luck.”

Allen winked one blue eye at her, half smiled, and went inside. She turned away as the door closed, then began walking, thinking of every step she made from where they had stood and how she was still at a spot where she could turn around and change something. The air was still there—she could do it—but then some more steps, more steps, and she realized she couldn’t.

Not now now now.

Not now.
