Europe and Asia. The most well-known of these breeds are the Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Akbash, and the Maremma Sheepdog (shown). These dogs are typically between 25 and 40 inches tall and weigh between 60 and 140 lbs when fully grown. The variances depend on the specific breed, genes, sex, exercise, and comprehensive dietary intake.

If the risk is from human intruders, a suitable dog can may be trained to only act aggressively towards

unrecognized humans (not other and then tethered or enclosed

unsupervised in an area the owner wishes to protect when not around, such as during the night. The stereotypical "junkyard dog" is a common example of this type of training. If the purpose of the dog is to protect against human

intruders after nightfall, a large bodied, dark colored dog in a dark house with the lights off or in an open field or yard will easily give the dog an advantage over the intruder. By in large, female dogs tend to make better personal guardians than males, due to maternal instincts, but males are considered better for guarding property because of their greater territorial instinct. Larger, dominant male dogs would, in general, do better guarding against wolves and other predatory creatures.

With the right socialization, training, and physical environment, LGDs can be successful family pets and home protectors as well. Unless their aggression is trained away, they tend to act generally antagonistic toward strangers and their size alone is rather intimidating. Though strong, independent-minded, and protective, they are normally gentle with towards children and livestock they’ve come to know. Properly trained, they have the ability to bond with nearly any other animal with which it assumes a protective parental attitude while readily accepting a secondary role to their human owners.

It is best to buy your large guard dog from a reputable breeder. To find this breeder, solicit recommendations from other farm owners and organizations that specialize with this type of animal. Many LGD breeders train puppies to work with poultry prior to sale so the pups will have some foreknowledge that these chickens are not feathery chew toys. Remember, that the farmer trusts the dog with the lives of their stock, so it’s important that proper training is completed in a timely manner.

Assure that the chosen dog has a high temperament and is of strong character. The higher the caliber and intelligence of the individual dog, the greater the dog’s overall ability to manage a threatening situation. This can be likened to the difference in ability of the average member of the military versus someone selected for U. S. Special Forces (Army Rangers, Navy Seals, etc). Look for a dog that marries companionship and devotion with protection. The dog should be an affectionate and friendly companion with training that assures a quick response to off-leash commands the first time, regardless of the situation. The dog should also have the ability and skills to defend the family and farm should the need ever arise.
