Momentum Motivator 1: Reward Driven

I am a reward-driven person when it comes to pushing through and achieving my Momentum Milestones. In other words, in order for me to be motivated to accomplish something, there has to be something in it for me. When my goal can be checked off, I can cash in on a prize of some kind.

During my first pregnancy I gained 60 pounds. I knew I needed to get the pounds off and was desperate to find the motivation to lose that much weight. However, I knew the task was not going to be easy. My doctor kept saying things like, “Well, it did take you nine months to put that weight on, so it will probably take you at least nine months to get rid of it.”

Thinking about being on a diet for nine months seemed like an eternity. I didn’t want to avoid my favorite things for that long. So I had to figure out what I needed to do based on what had motivated me in the past. Prior to that, I had the most success making my goals happen when there was a reward involved, so I decided to apply that in this situation. I made a goal chart in my bathroom where I wrote out what prize I would get for every five pounds I lost. I needed the prizes to be motivating enough that I wouldn’t give up on pursuing the weight loss.

So I listed out things that were practical, useful, and fun. That may seem boring to some, but some of the practical items were things I really wanted but wouldn’t normally spend our funds on. For example, my first prize was replacing my old dishes with new Fiesta brand dishes. Fiesta dishes are far more expensive than the incomplete vintage sets I had in my cabinet from the thrift store. Those dishes were an investment of sorts. So even though they were a practical, useful purchase, they were highly motivating for me because they weren’t something I would normally just go out and buy myself.

Among other things, I wanted a nice backyard grill, a backyard fire pit, a fancy blender, and a $100 handbag. To fund the rewards, we created a line item in our Free Spend Category labeled “Kim’s Rewards.” Each month we would put a little money in that line item to save for when it was time for me to cash in. When I got to my goal, I had the money put aside to buy my next prize—no guilt!

If you are highly motivated by trophies, awards, money, spa days, mini-vacations, or other prizes for accomplishments, you’re probably highly motivated by rewards. Consider that as a factor in helping you keep going after your Momentum Milestones for the long haul.

If you’re a reward-driven person, you might find it motivating to…

1. Create a line item in your Easy Sync Budget labeled “My Rewards.” Each payday contributes a little here and there so that when you achieve your milestone, you have the money to fund your reward.
