The Unchangeable Name

Since we have started new churches around the world—in cities like London, Kiev, Dusseldorf, Paris, Cape Town, New York, and most recently in Los Angeles—we might be tempted to assume that the Hillsong name is drawing people. But this would be a huge mistake. The name Hillsong may initially attract people, but it will never save anybody!

Don’t get me wrong; we’re blessed to have a recognized name that God has graced, like Hillsong. It’s our name and God has blessed us with this name. In fact, I know Hillsong is perhaps a bit of a weird name for a church. You might have guessed by now that it didn’t emerge from the original Hebrew or Greek text, and you won’t find Hillsong in the Bible. No, we pioneered our little church in an area of rolling hills in Sydney’s Northwest called the “Hills District.” It’s about as simple as that.

When we began to produce our very first live worship albums I realized that people might not buy music titled “Hills Christian Life Centre Worship” (reflecting our original church name)—it just didn’t roll off the tongue. So I got together with our team, and we sat and brainstormed what these projects could be called—and eventually everyone settled on “Hillsong.” At the time, this brand encompassed our albums and our small annual music and creative conference—so each advertisement we put out would invite people along to these “Hillsong” events. But as both the worship and conference quickly gained traction, and more and more people came along, there seemed to be confusion about the name of the church. It wasn’t uncommon to hear “Is this the Hills Christian Centre?” or “Hills Life Centre?” and “Is this those music people from the Hills?” Eventually people started saying things like “Are you going to that Hillsong Church?” until we got the hint and changed our name. And the rest—as they say—is history.

Hillsong is a name now recognizable not only in Australia but around the world! Little did we know that a small suburban church, locally nicknamed simply as “Hills,” would spread so far beyond the district of its namesake.

Needless to say, we are proud to be part of this global church community, and we thank God that he’s given us influence through the Hillsong name.

But the real influence, the real power source of every ministry ever attempted by Hillsong, has nothing to do with the name that is over the door of our church. The real influence and power source comes from the One who is our focus and Savior. Any impact we have comes from the Son of God, Jesus. He is who we worship, who we follow, who we look to guide us. His name is above every name and has power above every other name. It’s never been about a church called Hillsong—it’s always been about a Savior called JESUS!
