Spiritual Armaments

Paul received his revelation concerning spiritual weaponry as he looked at the armor of the Roman soldiers throughout his ministry, and he used the analogy in his epistles more than once to describe our spiritual equipment. In Second Corinthians 10:4, he referenced this weaponry when he said, “…The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God….” And the same is true in Ephesians 6:11 where Paul admonished us to “put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” This was an easy illustration for the apostle to use because he had been physically bound to many soldiers during his many imprisonments through the years.

Standing next to the imposing figures of these Roman soldiers, Paul could see their weaponry in detail, which consisted of:

A loin belt

A large breastplate

Brutal shoes that were affixed with spikes

A massive, body-length shield

An intricate helmet

A piercing sword

A long, specially tooled lance that could be thrown from a distance to hit an enemy from afar
