LIBERTY STEPPED OUT INTO THE HALLWAY.
âYo, SAM,â she said in a low voice.
âSup, James?â
âAre you ready, Liberty?â SAM asked her.
âRats, you knew it was me?â Liberty said.
âWell, Iâm your Secret Service agent,â SAM reminded her. âItâs my job to know these things. Plus, who else would come out of your room?â
âOh, yeah,â Liberty said. âBut isnât my disguise excellent? James, I brought you a Porter SupPorter baseball hat so we could match.â
She placed the extra one on his head.
âNow donât blow my cover by calling me âLiberty,ââ Liberty said.
âRuffles is leaving the residence,â SAM said into his ear thing.
âRottweiler!â Liberty whispered to James.
âOkay, letâs go downstairs,â James said. âThis is the public part of the White House. More than a million people tour it every year.â
Now that was going to be weird. In her old house, sure, sheâd had her friends over after school. But more than one MILLION people? That was one seriously big playdate.
They got into one of the elevators. Liberty presssed the button and grinned.
She had elevators in her house. How cool was that?
The elevator opened.
Everything was so shiny and pretty. There was beautiful art. There were flowers everywhere. There were pictures of the presidents and their wives hanging all over the walls.
Liberty felt like their eyes were watching her.
âSo,â SAM said. âWhere do you want to go first?â
Liberty opened her mouth to answer. But first, her stomach answered the question for her.
Grumble. Grumble. Growl.
âWas that noise from your stomach?â James asked her. âIt sounds like mine after I eat dairy.â
Yes. It was. Liberty was suddenly very hungry, even though she had gone to the big Inauguration Lunch.
