Chapter Twenty-Five

Cyndi spun to her left, dodging the grimy blade. She used the bottom of her fist like a sledgehammer and delivered a crushing blow to the thug’s radius bone in his forearm. It snapped in half with a sickening crack. He shrieked and fell to his knees, bent over in agony.

Cyndi launched her foot upward, catching the man right in the face. His head snapped back as he tumbled to the ground. Blood gushed from his mangled nose.

Before the second thug could launch his attack, Cyndi had already spun back around. She raised her left foot and drove it into his stomach. His head bounced off the bumper of Lance’s truck as he fell backward. He lay in the mud bleeding, writhing in pain next to his buddies.

Cyndi snatched both knives up from the mud. “Last chance, boys. Hit the road or else.”

The injured men stumbled to their feet and disappeared into the darkness.

Cyndi drew her arm back and tossed the knives thirty yards out into the weeds.

During all the excitement they’d failed to notice a fourth guy behind them lurking in the shadows. He covertly approached Cyndi from behind and grabbed her shoulder. “I saw what you did to—”

She spun around and latched on to his hand. Cyndi bent it back and violently twisted, aiming to snap the small bones in his wrist.

He countered her move by doing a sideways flip, completely negating the torque she’d applied.

Cyndi launched her fist forward for a throat strike.

He ducked and latched on to her forearm, forcing her arm straight up in the air.

The two skilled combatants were now locked together, face to face. Cyndi could feel his hot breath on her cheek.

Before she could stop him, the wiry adversary had spun her around and put Cyndi in a deadly chokehold. She flailed around trying to break his hold on her, but nothing she did worked. Cyndi gasped for air as he tightened his grip on her throat. Her vision began to narrow.

“Stop resisting!” the man yelled. “I just want to—”

Lance rushed over and put the man in the same deadly chokehold. “Let her go, or I’ll snap your damned neck!”

With Cyndi’s dangerous skills temporarily neutralized, the man was understandably reluctant to release her. He tightened his grip even more.

“I said let her go!” Lance yelled with an unmistakable finality in his voice.

The man knew he was in a no-win situation. He had a tiger by the tail and a lion on his back. He released Cyndi and raised his arms in surrender. “I mean you no harm, ma’am. I just want to talk to you.”

Cyndi jerked away from the man. “Who the hell are you? And why did you attack me?”

“I’m sorry, ma’am, I didn’t mean to startle you. I shouldn’t have snuck up on you like that.” He extended his hand in a gesture of peace. “I’m Armando Alvarez.” He was thin but solidly built with intense, piercing brown eyes and short black hair.

Cyndi instinctively jumped back from his outstretched hand.
