Tariq and Melbourne Jack made their way through the Rif Mountains to the area where the tribe should have beenâbut the site was completely empty! They searched the area for over two hours but there was no sign of the tribe or their trail. They were about to give up hope when a voice called out from a distant tree.
âTariq?â
Tariq and Jack both stood up and looked into the direction of the tree. A man came from behind it and approached them both.
It was Himli, one of the tribeâs scouts!
Tariq ran to him and they hugged each other in a welcome embrace.
âHimli, where is everyone? Where have they gone?â
Himli motioned into the distance. âOver beyond that point. And who is this?â Himli asked, eyeing Jack suspiciously.
âAh, this is Melbourne Jack. He is a sworn enemy of the Caid and a good friend of mine. Do not worry, he is on our side,â Tariq said with a smile.
âGood to meet you, mate,â Jack said and extended his arm.
Himli nodded and shook Jackâs hand. This man was definitely not from Moroccoâand he looked different from anyone Himli had ever met. As Jack was an Aborigine from Australia, his darker skin, curly hair, and moustache were definitely alien to most Moroccans.
âCome, gather your things. We can make camp before nightfall,â Himli ordered and soon all three of them were walking down a valley trail. Himli made an effort to cover their tracks and they proceeded, taking a series of alternate trails and routes to throw off any followers.
âHimli, I am so sorry to hear of Malik and Sanaa. My heart is still hurting from the news,â Tariq explained in a very sad voice.
âTariq, have you not heard?â
âHeard what?â
âMalik and Sanaa are alive! They have returned to the camp with Zijuan. Oh, I can see there is much to tell you.â
Tariq stopped in his tracks and stared at Himli.
âAre you joking with me, Himli?â
âNo, they have been asking for you. They will be overjoyed to see you!â
Tariq suddenly screamed with delight, raised his hands, and started jumping up and down. He hugged Himli tightly and then hugged Melbourne Jack. He didnât stop yelling and hollering for thirty seconds.
Himli and Jack simply stood and smiled at Tariqâs joy.
âThis is the best news I could ever receive! I am so happy, Himli! All of my prayers have been answered.â
âBut Tariq, there is one other thing I must tell you. Malik is blind,â Himli explained as his voice retreated to a whisper.
Tariq stopped jumping around.
âBlind? What are you saying?â
âThe Black Mamba captured Malik and Sanaa. He tied them up and buried them up to their heads in sand. He then stitched their eyes wide open so the sun would blind them. Sanaa managed to escape blindness, but Malik was not so fortunate.â
Tariq stared at Himli with a quizzical look on his face.
âWhen did all this happen, Himli?â
âCome, Iâll tell you on the way. We must hurry to make camp by nightfall.â
The three continued to walk at a brisk pace while Himli recounted all the new happenings within the camp and the tribe.
