Chapter Fifteen

I was attracting a lot more attention than I expected to at school on Monday. By lunch, I was really missing the security blanket of my dark curls.

“Without Nate’s protective watch and warnings, guys are noticing you even more now. Face it, Baker, you’re hot!” Taylor said to me with a laugh. “I know Mitch is still holding out for you.”

“I’m not interested. I don’t even know where Nate and I stand.” Based on his note, it didn’t seem like he wanted to break up, but based on his actions, it was the only thing I could believe.

“It’s so weird that he hasn’t tried to get in touch with you. Like, why would he have given you the promise ring if he really intended to break up?”

“I don’t know.” I’d wondered the same thing almost endlessly.

“Maybe he didn’t want to.”

“Then why didn’t he tell me about Western? Why did he let me think he was staying and we had a future? Why hasn’t he contacted me since he left?” Tears rushed to my eyes. I wiped at them furiously. “God, I was just starting to feel okay!”

“Allie, I’m sorry,” I heard Taylor say as I stormed off. I knew it wasn’t her fault; my emotions were all over the place. I shouldn’t be annoyed at her when it’s Nate I was truly upset with.

I ended up in the library, just like the good old days before everything had changed. I was about to toss my bag down at the table I used to always sit at, but noticed it was already occupied by the new guy Tawny had brought to my birthday party. He looked up at me in surprise.

“Sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t realize anyone was sitting here.”

“You’re welcome to use the table too.”

“Thanks.” I sat in the chair opposite him. “I’m Allie.”

“Right. I think we met briefly at your birthday party. I’m Luc.”

“Nice to meet you. Welcome to Fairfield.”

He smiled slightly and I couldn’t help but notice how attractive he was. He looked like he could play an onscreen superhero. “Thanks. I just moved from the city, but my mom was from here originally.”

I smiled weakly and pulled out my chemistry textbook. I hoped it didn’t come across as rude, but I wasn’t in the mood for small talk. He turned back to the sketchbook in front of him. I wouldn’t have pegged him as an artist, but it was intriguing. I opened my book to the front page. Nate was here was written on the page in his boyish scrawl. I immediately dropped the thick book onto the table, startling Luc.

“Sorry,” I said. He gave me an uncertain look and went back to drawing.

I let out a shaky breath. It felt like Nate was everywhere, like I’d never be able to escape him. No matter where I went, there was always some reminder of him. Maybe Nate hadn’t wanted our relationship to be over, but why would he have gone about things the way
