Remembering to the Do This Ritual

Remembering to do the Exit Ritual can be the one of the hardest parts of this beautiful ritual of contact with powers and beings. Benjamin Franklin said that it took at least 21 days to form a new habit. Many spiritual teachings emphasize 40 days as the amount of time needed to imbed something into your experience. So, if you are feeling frustrated by your own forgetfulness, take a breath and relax. We all forget to do rituals the beginning.

To help yourself remember, you might buy a pack of sticky notes and post reminders to yourself on your doors (so that you see them as you go outside) and on the rearview mirror of your car. These will prompt you to remember. Alternately, program your smart phone to remind you.

Also, if you find yourself driving in your car and realize that you have forgotten to do the Exit Ritual, pull your car over to the side of the road and stop. Take the time, then and there, to get out of your car and do it. Once you have to stop your car a few times you’ll begin to remember!

Good luck and keep up the effort—the rewards are worth all the effort! Here’s the Exit Ritual again, compressed into four short lines to make it easier to remember:

Sky Above [extend attention into sky]

And Earth Below [extend attention into earth, keeping it in sky also]

I Greet You. [keep attention in both sky and earth]

[Pause a minute after saying this]
