Let us take the example of the research partnership between Bayer HealthCare, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT). Initiated in 2009, the academic institutions provided their expertise in cancer research and tumor biology, and Bayer brought in its know-how in drug R&D. The goal of this strategic partnership was the transfer of research results of DKFZ into Bayer’s drug discovery and development process, i.e. to improve the pharma company’s knowledge base and to fill its oncology pipeline.

This type of collaboration is considered a drug discovery alliance; a long-term (spanning several years) alliance of a research-based pharmaceutical company with a biotechnology company or a research institute to support technology transfer and optionally drug candidate licensing. The advantages of such an alliance are (from the point of view of the pharma partner):Bypassing tedious long-lasting licensee-licensor negotiations in subsequent drug licensing;
