HOMEWORK

Equip your special needs student to succeed in his class and homework

Homework isn’t fun for any student, but special needs students tend to have more anxiety associated with homework assignments. If you are a parent of a special needs child, help your child have homework success.

Have a routine with a designated homework station: Every day at the same time set aside time specifically for homework. The homework should be done in the same spot so there is no confusion of what is expected when the child comes to this spot.

Deaf Parents of a Hearing Child

• How does a teacher communicate with deaf parents of a hearing child?

• It is unfair to ask the child to be the interpreter; often those words are not intended to be heard by the student.

• If you aren’t confident in your signing ability, get an interpreter for the conference. The ADA requires access to an interpreter for the deaf parents.

• Consider using e-mail or writing down the key points of what needs to be communicated.
