Chapter 11

There was one other magic worker in the city who might know if there was someone powerful enough to wield the spell. She might even know more about the spell itself. It was a long shot, but I was willing to try anything. I needed to figure this out and deal with Kabita before anything worse happened.

Emory Chastain came from a very long line of portal witches. The magic in her was strong, as it was in all her coven. Not enough for the spell, according to Eddie, but they had to be tapped into things. I knew they were friends with members from other covens, and sometimes they blended their powers.

I was halfway there when my phone rang. "Are you all right?" Inigo sounded calm, but I knew him well enough to know he wasn't.

"Of course, why?"

"I stopped by the house to check on you. The room looked like a tornado hit it and you were gone. You were supposed to be resting."

"I was, but then weird shit started happening."

"What kind of weird shit?"

I told him about the stuff levitating and flying around, and how I'd gone to Cordelia. I left out the part about Kabita coming for vengeance. He didn't need that on his plate.

"Where are you now?"

"On my way to Emory's. I thought she might be able to point me in the right direction."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"And tell you what? A ghost is smashing stuff in our house? I'm visiting a friend. Come on. You're not my babysitter."

He was quiet so long, it made me nervous. "No, Morgan, I'm not. But I do love you. Can you imagine how I felt when I saw the state of the bedroom? How I felt when I couldn't find you? How I felt when you didn't answer my texts?"

He'd texted me? Oh, crap. I'd been so busy doing my thing, I hadn't even noticed.

"We're supposed to be a team," he continued, "yet you keep treating me like an inconvenience."

"That's not true," I snapped. "I just… I'm used to doing things on my own. I forget." I winced even as the words came out of my mouth. "I didn't mean it that way. I just—"

"Tell Emory hello for me." Then he hung up.

Dammitall. I was going to have some making up to do. I sighed. Such was my lot in life lately. I really sucked at the whole relationship thing. Funny, because before I became a hunter, there was nothing I'd wanted more than the traditional white picket fence scenario. Now the whole relationship/baby/commitment thing was freaking me out.

I focused on the task at hand. I could deal with the drama in my life later. Much later.

I found Emory at her shop on Sellwood. The floor was made of wide wooden boards the color of coffee, the walls painted white and lined with glass shelves containing neatly organized vials of herbal tinctures and bottles of powder mixes. In the center of the room, beneath a crystal chandelier, a farmhouse table painted shabby chic white was piled with tins of herbal tea, candles, and homemade soaps.
