CHAPTER FOURTEEN

bash

While I knew Arely and her family had money, I had no idea they had private plane kind of money. The inside was all white and gold, making you feel like you were ensconced in luxury. The plush leather seats were soft and molded perfectly to your body. If I could live on this plane, I would.

I sat by the window, looking out at the world below me. I’d never flown before, nor had I left the country, and today I was doing both in style.

Arely, Santiago, and Pablo were in the back having a meeting while Ale and Army sat on a couch playing a video game and fighting about who was cheating. The rest of the seats were filled by the guards that were brought for our protection.

When I woke up this morning, a passport sat on the bedside table with a note to pack and be ready in an hour. I wasn’t sure how they got me a passport so fast. It was only five days since they decided to make the trip, but I wasn’t going to question it. Two hours later, we were boarding their plane.

“Enjoying the view?” came Arely’s honeyed voice as she sat down beside me.

“I’ve never flown before,” I muttered as I continued to look out the window.

She ran one lone fingernail from my hand up my arm and circled back down. “You should have said something, and I wouldn’t have left you to your own devices during takeoff. I’m guessing since no one said anything, you didn’t mind the takeoff.”

I caught her hand in mine as I shifted to look at her. “I was fine. The reason for never flying wasn’t because I thought I would freak out. It was merely the fact that I never had any money or any place to go.”

She gave me a small, almost innocent smile. Except there was nothing innocent about Arely. She was a hardcore badass. She probably came out of the womb that way. “I know it might seem like I’ve always lived like this, but I haven’t—only the twins. When I was young, we were poor. My two brothers and I lived in a one-bedroom apartment with our parents. I don’t remember much since I was so young, but I remember my father working night and day to provide for us. He started at the bottom and worked his way up to being the boss.” She blinked, coming back into focus, and looked at me. “I’m not naïve. I’m sure he killed people to get where he was. That’s the price you pay for living in this world.”

Arely was right. I would never have guessed at any point in her life she’d been poor. Maybe she could appreciate where I came from.

“Be prepared for a culture shock and be on your toes. Some of the places we’re going are violent. That’s the only way of life they know.”

Why was she telling me this?

“You haven’t had any training, but I want you to remain vigilant.
