Chapter 7

I couldn’t believe I’d been in school for several weeks. I’d even fallen into a daily routine with Shay and Lori, where we met up at breakfast and alternated eating lunch with the princes. Sebastian had changed little. He tolerated my presence but hardly said a word to me, which was a vast improvement from the hurtful words he flung at me that one day.

“Pay attention, Viola,” Carlisle said.

My head turned from my outstretched palms and I glared at him. “What do you think I’m doing?” I snapped. “I can’t produce magic.”

“We know you can. You did it before. Try again. Close your eyes and feel for the magic inside of you. Once you feel it, think of what you want to happen and do it. If it helps, move your hands and wave them around to help channel the energy.”

He might as well be speaking Latin because he made little sense. I felt nothing. There was no magic inside of me.

“You’re not trying hard enough,” he bit out.

I gritted my teeth and let out a loud huff through my nose, while gesturing wildly with my hands. “You sho...” I threw him across the room, and his back hit the wall. “Oh my god! Are you okay?”

He groaned and sat up. “That’s what I’m talking about. Maybe next time, don’t direct it at me?” He smiled, but blood started dripping from his cut lip.

I grabbed a tissue and pressed it on his mouth. He froze, and for a moment, we held each other’s eyes. My heart skipped a beat. I cleared my throat and directed my attention to the cut, which had stopped bleeding.

“Are you ready to try again?” he asked.

I nodded, avoiding his eyes. We tried for the rest of the period with no success, which persisted every time we met. The only time I would see a hint of my powers was when he used his, but all I could do is copy what he did, which wasn’t much progress since we couldn’t move forward until I could call powers on my own.

I’d had no contact with Kol. I’d been keeping an eye out for him, but I hadn’t seen him around. I supposed he’d changed his mind about helping me. When I saw him with his crew, he avoided my eyes and pretended I didn’t exist while the rest of the Vampires left me alone.

At the most, I would sometimes catch them throwing me a nasty look when they thought I couldn’t see them. The witches were more obvious with their disdain. When I passed by, they would put their heads together and loudly whisper “freak” or “whore” or other nasty things I ignored. The Shifters were friendly but kept their distance.

Tristan and I had been spending a lot of time together but had avoided being alone too often since we couldn’t seem to keep our hands off each other. It was getting harder each day to hold back. What was I waiting for? Some kind of sign?

Tristan was amazing and attentive and the best boyfriend a girl could ask for.
