Chapter Fourteen

Kip

As we walked the path leading to the mountainous retreat for the wizards, my stomach felt like it was going to springboard out of my body. Stryder, moving just one step ahead of me, kept clenching and unclenching his hands, as if imagining himself wringing someone’s neck. A cadre of guards, military advisors and soldiers walked with us in the lead, flanked by Roane and Harley.

The wizards, having seen us coming, were lined up outside of the entrance of the retreat and awaited our arrival. As we got closer I spotted Greyfeld and Bishop off to one side. Bishop was standing a half-step behind Greyfeld, as if Greyfeld would protect him, and his eyes belayed a sense of panic. Now knowing the effect written magic could have on a wizard, I noticed the dark pockets under his eyes, wrinkles lining his face, and his bowed back. It looked as if the retreat hadn’t helped him relax at all.

In contrast, Greyfeld stood with his arms crossed, an expression of combative bemusement on his face. I wanted to slap it off his face. No, push him over the cliff and watch him try and flap like a bird into the valley below. Could wizards fly? I doubted it.

If they could, I wondered if one of them would give me a ride? I’d always wanted to fly.

An elderly man stepped forward, snapping my attention to the matter at hand.

Now this guy looked the stereotype of a wizard, with bushy gray eyebrows and a long, pointed beard. He was even wearing a long, grey, shapeless robe.

Like Gandalf in the movie.

Yep, just like him.

Did Gandalf have a beard? I couldn’t remember.

I was starting to forget a lot of things about the human world.

"What business do you have here, my King?” the Gandalf-wizard said.

"I have come with evidence of treason by two of your own, Cardon," Stryder said.

Ohh, so this was Cardon. Stryder had only spoken briefly of Cardon, whom he entrusted to investigate the wizards. Stryder seemed to have great respect for his wisdom and his ability to govern the other wizards. However, wizards, as Stryder said, were a brotherhood, and often cared for their own first. I worried how well we could trust him in this situation.

Cardon's bushy gray eyebrows lifted so far that they nearly reached his hairline, but quickly he made his face blank. "That is a very serious allegation, my lord. Most serious.”

"I agree, this is a most serious allegation, and one I do not take lightly. May we speak in private?"

"Only you, my lord?" Cardon asked, his eyes floating over to me.

"Myself and Kip, as she is involved. The others can wait," Stryder said evenly. There was no argument in his voice.

Cardon nodded and motioned to Greyfeld. "Greyfeld, see to it that the rest of the wizards make the delegation comfortable."

"Actually, Cardon, my men are not here to be comfortable. Please allow them to do their duty and keep an eye on all of your wizards, as I’ve instructed them.
