Chapter 32

Matt

With my head nodding to the beat, I rapped my drumsticks over the pads of my electronic kit, drumming out a heavy blast beat, playing whatever rhythm flowed through me. Unlike the other guys in the band, I wasn’t into writing music and creating new sounds to perform for our fans, but I did enjoy mucking around and playing beats by feel.

Lately, there hadn’t been much time to play, but with Piper starting her training with Alex, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to release some pent up energy.

Taking the beats faster again, I let my mind replay the events of the past few weeks. The situation with my band brothers was not ideal. I knew I’d have to smooth things over with them at some stage, but right now it was still too raw.

What had happened at the meeting had certainly made one thing clear, and that was how little the guys knew the real me, but I guessed that was my fault. They all knew touring was my escape, but I’d never really explained to them why. I’d told them a little about my mom and the fact that she was a drug addict, but that was the extent of it. I just thought that regardless of them not knowing my complete life story, they’d grown to know me enough to be able to see changes within me. Or at least respect me enough to listen to what I had to say.

Changing the rhythm to something a little softer, I stretched my neck. As far as how things were with Piper, the best way I could describe it was ‘delicate.’ She’d seemed distracted and uncertain about everything lately, including what she wanted for breakfast. I wasn’t sure if it was the pregnancy hormones or not, but I was seriously starting to get whiplash from her signals. One minute she seemed like she was trying to fuck me with her eyes, and the next she was running to get away from me. It was fucking draining. I had no idea where I stood with her at all.

As I eased the rhythm and switched to a slow tempo backbeat, I saw my phone light up with a call. A smirk tugged on my lips as I saw Rhett’s name across the screen.

Pulling my headphones down to hang around my neck, I swiped the screen to answer. “Hey, man. What are you doing?”

“I’m standing outside your door. Come and let me in,” he deadpanned.

I laughed as the line went dead, clutching my sticks in one hand as I moved toward the front door. As soon as I opened it, Rhett walked in, a box of beer under his arm. “Which way?” he asked.

I pointed down the hall toward the kitchen.

“Are you alone?” he asked as he slid the box onto the counter.

I watched as he opened it up and pulled two bottles out, handing one to me. “I am. Do I want to know why you’re asking?” I said as I cracked it and took a drink.
