CHAPTER SEVEN

Kathleen followed the proud papa down into the dining room. He'd held his son and kissed his wife – several times, and had finally agreed to let her get some sleep. A round of cheer went up when he told them his wife had given him a boy. Handshakes, backslaps, and cigars followed and she left them to it.

She looked for Dermot and finally saw him seated at a table near the fireplace.

"How's Emma?" he asked.

"She's very tired, but all right." She seated herself next to him thinking he seemed incredibly sad. "What's wrong with ye?"

"Nothing, it's been a long day is all." He stared at his empty shot glass.

Something about his mood frightened her and the joy she'd had a few minutes ago evaporated. "You were going to tell me something earlier. What was it?"

"Tell me your news first."

"I wanted ye to know why I ran off this morning. I thought ye were going to marry Elisabeth Morgan and I was beside myself. I've since found out the truth."

"Why would ye . . . never mind, it doesn't matter." He straightened and reached around behind him for his boots. He tugged them on and glanced up at her. "It's been good to see ye, Katie."

Ian joined them at the table, and shook Dermot's hand. He then poured two shots and toasted, "Here's to Joseph Ambrose Benning, my son."

"To many years of good health." Dermot set his glass down half empty. "I wish I was going to be there to see him grow up."

"What are you talking about? You'll be right there, helping him along."

"I thank ye for the hospitality of your home, giving me a place to live, but as soon as the weather lets up, I'll be moving on."

Kathleen gasped. Her chest constricted, she couldn't draw a deep breath and her fingers tingled like they'd suddenly gone to sleep. "But ye can't leave. We've only just found each other again. Why must ye go?"

"Because I'll not be watching you parading around town with another man. I thought I could do it, but I can't."

Her stomach threatened to rise into her throat so she picked up Dermot's half-empty shot glass and downed its contents in a single gulp. She hadn't done that since she worked at the tavern. The liquor burned all the way down but it did manage to furnish her with much needed courage to proceed.

"I'm not – Oh, Dermot," she fretted. "My life is in such a jumble. While 'tis true I'm a married woman it's possible I'm a widow."

Dermot stared at her, his confusion apparent. "What? When? How?"

Ian laughed out loud. "Well, Irish, I don't believe I've ever seen you flabbergasted. My congratulations to the lady." He poured whiskey into both shot glasses, setting one in front of each of them. "Looks like you two have some talking to do."

When Ian had left them alone, Kathleen said quietly, "I'm sorry, Dermot, but ye needed to know."

"I want to know everything, love, the whole lot." His features softened as he took her hand in his.
