Chapter Eight

Baby Blues

Kassie wandered around the streets like a lost puppy. She couldn’t wrap her mind around the fact that her son had committed such a heinous crime. She had tried her very best to keep Tyvin from falling to the wayside like his sisters. She had sheltered him, coddled him, and protected him as best as she could. However, her best wasn’t enough. He was his father’s child; which meant he was bound to be a fuck up, just like the other two fuck up’s she’d bred.

Kassie began her long trek home from the hospital. She didn’t know why she left without Eve. She didn’t know why she blamed the whole situation on her either. Kassie felt like had she not been hanging out with Eve, none of this would have ever happened.

So what she’d keyed Eve’s car. Kassie had lost way more than a set of wheels. Her entire existence was in shambles again. Her son being in police or Child Protective custody wasn’t the worst of it. She had seen Reem. Whenever he reared his ugly head there was bound to be trouble, and tonight was no exception to that theory.

Kassie let the tears slide from her eyes as she ambled aimlessly down the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue. Cars swerved to avoid hitting her, and all Kassie could think about was how she could fix all of this mess without resorting to taking the same drastic measures she had taken before to save herself and her children.

When she arrived in front of her door some two hours later, she almost turned back and ran the other way. Kassie was grateful that the circus that had greeted her the first time she had arrived home was now gone. She knew if she went through the door, she would have to face her daughters. They would want answers on Tyvin’s whereabouts. Kassie didn’t feel like answering their questions and she damn sure didn’t want to deal with either of them.

She held her breath and twisted the knob and let herself inside. The first thing Kassie noticed was the discarded bowls of food left on her table. There was no doubt in her mind that her daughters expected her to clean up their mess. She always cleaned up their messes. Kassie shook her head and continued further into the house. She left the dishes and half-eaten food where it was, and proceeded up the stairs. It was well after 4:00 in the morning, so she assumed her daughters were asleep. Kassie tiptoed past their room and down the hall to her own room. When she thought she was in the clear, she heard the girls’ room door open. Kassie spun around and came face to face with Brisha who stood before her doe-eyed.

“Momma, where is Tyvin? Is everything a’ight?” she asked, concerned.

Kassie rolled her eyes and turned back in the direction of her room. She didn’t feel like talking to Brisha, and she didn’t feel like explaining the details of what had happened at the hospital.
