CHAPTER 14
I showered and laid down with GC on my mind only to be awakened by Kenisha making a big fuss at the crack of dawn. Man, this can’t be life! I threw my head back onto my pillow, trying to ignore her ranting. I was just too tired to deal. After about five minutes, she was still going, “Who the hell is she talking to?”
Curiosity killed the cat, as I eased out of the bed and stood close to my bedroom door to listen. It wasn’t like Kenisha to be fussing about much of anything…. She was always in control, so this had to be serious. After a couple of seconds of listening, I realized that she was fussing with Dee, or better yet, fussing with herself, because I didn’t hear him say much of anything. She was livid.
“Dee! Y’all killed his fucking mother! Don’t you think you should have told me about this?! My mother and sister still live in Miami…. Don’t you know that nigga will go after them trying to get to you?! Well, of course you do! You taught me the game, so why are you acting so fuckin’ careless right now?!” She screamed at him.
“Watch your fuckin’ mouth, man. That’s why I’m telling you now, so we can go get them and drop them to your house…. and why you screaming? Damn, tell the whole neighborhood we offed the nigga ol girl.” I heard him respond; he wasn’t screaming at all. His vocals were as they always were. “Are they ready?” He asked her.
“Yea, they’re ready! Let’s go.” She told him.
I heard silence for a few seconds, and then, footsteps down the stairs. The door slamming was confirmation that they were gone. I now realized what Santana didn’t want me to know… I turned on the morning news to see if this was a story, and sure enough, Channel Ten was covering the story. They referred to it as a blood bath in the projects…. and when I saw the picture of the lady who looked just like Mack flash across the screen, and that she was pronounced dead with one shot to the head, I knew that what Kenisha said was true. I was shocked; I knew this was going to get ugly, but these nigga’s weren’t playing. They went down there and shut shit down.
“Is this still the life that you want?” My mother asked, standing behind me.
“Oh, shit!” I jumped, not even realizing that she had walked into my room. “Of course not, mom. Trouble doesn’t last always…. I’m going to stick by my man.” I told her, while continuing to watch the news.
“You sound just like me when I was your age. I was the same exact way about your father.” She cleared her throat and lay across my bed, watching the story with me. “Understand that, if it wasn’t for what they did to my mother, I wouldn’t be here right now. And, I’d surely be hauling your ass back to New York.
