CHAPTER TEN

The 'spare bedroom' Kane had mentioned so dismissively turned out to take up most of the second floor. It came complete with an incredible view off its wrap-around deck and a white marble bathroom that would have been the height of luxury if there had been running water. There was, however, a huge pail of clean spring water that Kane must have carried up, confirming that he had anticipated her staying overnight.

Pretty damn presumptuous, Tabitha thought. Also, pretty thoughtful. It depended on how you looked at it, and right now, she lacked the clarity to decide.

Tabitha dropped both the packs on the thick, luxurious wool rug and eyed the bed. Its gorgeous wrought-iron headboard was a perfect backdrop for the beautifully patterned Pendleton woolen blankets in rich colors.

This had to be the largest bedroom in the house, so why wasn't Kane using it? Yet another mystery to add to the list. Because the longer she knew him, the more unsure Tabitha was about who he really was.

After splashing cold water on her face, she picked up a tortoiseshell brush she found in the vanity, along with a host of high-end toiletries. She figured they must have belonged to the former owners since she couldn't imagine Kane ordering hyacinth-scented lotion and two hundred dollar face cream from SALE.

Tabitha wasn't surprised that the previous occupants had left in haste. Nearly a year ago, when this new boundaryland had been hastily approved, she remembered seeing a copy of the government Order to Vacate on the news. After Tabitha detangled her hair—which was in a hell of a state after days of camping and weeks of recovery—she poured herself a glass of water and went over to the window and took in the magnificent vista in front of her.

She'd been a fool for dreading this trip to Missouri, expecting to find nothing but dead fields as far as the eye could see. But now that she knew how beautiful this part of the country was, Tabitha was almost sorry to be leaving.

Wait—strike that.

Tabitha shook her head to clear it. She couldn't think that way. It didn't matter how lovely the view was. She needed to get out of here.

There were good people in this boundaryland. Alphas like Hunter and Kane, who had saved her life. Her presence here was a real threat to them...even if they refused to see it.

Tabitha couldn't accept Kane's far-fetched theory that his blood had somehow bound her. But if it wasn't the transfusion, then what was it?

Tabitha set her empty glass down on the polished stone surface of a low table and took a deep breath. She couldn't avoid it any longer. She had to consider the possibility that there were things…powers…that Kane possessed that even he didn't fully understand.

When Tabitha had first read rumors that
