Chapter Twenty-Eight

MARCUS’ EYES LOOKED almost black, his hair ruffled and sexy. His dark stare pierced mine, as if he could read my mind, my soul. I wished I could read his.

He tucked a wayward strand of my hair behind my left ear. “How are you feeling, Carrie?”

I struggled to define my jumbled emotions. “Happy and satisfied. How are you feeling?”

His beautiful mouth smiled as if my words pleased him. “Terrific.” His eyes narrowed. “Are you sure I didn’t hurt you?”

“I feel wonderful.”

“I’m relieved. I’d never want to hurt you. I was afraid I may have.”

“Why would you think you’d hurt me?”

He exhaled a sigh. “You’re tight and I’m big. I lost control and wasn’t careful...And I was afraid I may have been too rough and torn you.”

His use of the word torn sounded strange. “Have you ever torn anyone before?”

He frowned. “Yes, but I don’t want to talk about that, Carrie.”

I huffed. “You mean you don’t want to tell me.”

He closed his eyes. “That’s right.”

“Why?”

“Because it involves my late wife, and it’s personal.”

My stomach clinched. “I feel as if you’re shutting me out, Marcus.”

He stroked my arm. “I don’t mean to.” He squinted as if in pain. “Please, understand. I don’t want to go there. So don’t badger me. I’m not one of your interviews.”

I poked him hard in the chest. “No, you’re not one of my interviews, Marcus. You’re my personal life.”

He chewed on his bottom lip. “I respect your feelings, and I’d like for you to respect mine.”

“I do respect your feelings, Marcus. I’ve respected your privacy for seven years, but when you said you were afraid you may have hurt me, I’d like to know what that means, exactly.”

He groaned, and I didn’t expect him to answer me. Maybe he was right. This was none of my business. If he refused to talk about it, so be it. He had a right to his privacy, and if he didn’t want to share certain things with me, that was his choice. I looked into his eyes but didn’t speak.

He closed his eyes, as if he wanted to hide. “When Susan and I first made love, we were young, eighteen and inexperienced. She was petite, only five feet tall. I was the same size as now, six-five. When we attempted intercourse, I tore her. It turned out to be severe.”

“Oh, no, Marcus, that’s terrible. I’m sorry, but I’m sure you didn’t mean to.”

His eyes remained closed. “I took her to the emergency room. A surgeon was able to repair the damage, but Susan was hurting, embarrassed and afraid. I was afraid, too. After she healed, I learned to please her and we enjoyed a good sex life, but I had to be very gentle, and we used a lubricant to make it easier on her.” He exhaled a sigh. “From now on, Carrie, I’d rather not talk about the past. I don’t want to open old wounds.”

I snuggled up to him. “Forgive me for being so nosy.”

“I suppose it’s an occupational hazard.
