He was carrying me off to the bedroom after eating and making out in front of the fireplace when my phone rang.

Then again. And again.

Then his joined in.

Then there were echoing growls from us. It wasn’t like a lot of people had our phone numbers. No, few did, and mine was normally only for emergencies or serious problems.

And they risked death by stalker calling instead of leaving a voicemail. No one that had my number was that stupid which was why I jumped out of his arms and hurried to where we’d left our phones in the bathroom.

“Lewis,” I answered.

“We have a serious fucking problem,” he blurted, sounding like he’d been running. “Ancient demons have taken one of the closed clubs hostage. Or the cleaning staff that were there doing a deep cleaning. They’ve taken it over. They’re going to take more unless all the VPs show up and admit they’re the demon council to them. It’s a trap.”

Not running, a panic attack. Lewis was amazing, one of the most talented people I’d ever known. He could juggle more than ten people and handle it all flawlessly.

But he was not a field guy. He wasn’t a fighter. There was no shame in that, not everyone could jump in. Hell, I’d have the panic attack if I had to clean up the mess I normally left after jumping in. That was where Lewis and my support people shined.

“We’ve got this, hon,” I said calmly. “We expected pushback. Don’t worry. Are the others being informed?”

“Yes, Natalia got the call first since she’s the face of the company, and people are passing it along now. What do you need?”

“Just the location. I’ve got this.”

“Jasmine, you cannot go alone.”

“I won’t be, but they shouldn’t have picked right now and pissed me off so fucking badly.” I thanked him when he told me the location and headed for the portal.

“We know about it, the council, I mean,” Aidan told me. “Apparently, the councils were alerted first. They’re trying to make a very loud statement.”

“Fear will do that. It’s why the ancients in Old World cities handle their own shit. They agree to leadership and they’re afraid it will get worse.”

“Sometimes it does,” Aidan defended.

“Abso-fucking-lutely, but most times it’s bad people wanting to hide the bad things they were doing. And I’m pissed that’s leaking into your seduction. I was really enjoying that. Let me kick some ass and then we’ll go back to the sex.”

“I’m coming.”

I nodded. “Meet you there. We can’t go in together when I’m not Sloan.”

“Be safe.”

I snorted. I wasn’t worried about some ancient demons. I was used to demons and had kicked a lot of their asses over the years. The ancients of other species worried me. I didn’t know as much about other supes as I did demons. Plus, lots of other supes had hurt me when I was younger, and those weren’t even the ancient ones.

I couldn’t change my mindset even with logic. Fear didn’t understand everything or that I was more powerful now.
