PLANS
âThank the good Lord you made it,â Andrew said when John and Isaac walked into the Old Mill. âWe thought theyâd got yea.â
âThey almost did,â John said. âIf it wasnâtââ
âYou wonât believe what we found!â Isaac shouted over Johnâs voice.
Everyone looked quizzically at Isaac.
âThe guards were right on us, and we thought that was it. We hid in a bush near the old Roman wall. I still canât believe it. We found a secret passage through the wall! We never have to use the city gates again. Thatâs how we escaped.â
âYou found a way through the wall?â Abraham exclaimed. âIâve heard stories of secret passages through the wall all my life, but Iâve never found one.â
âWe have now,â Isaac said. He was bouncing from foot to foot, so John nudged him.
âCalm down, Isaac,â John said. âWe were lucky because the guards were closing in. The one that shouted for me to stop knows me. Heâs worked for my father for as long as I can remember. Now that heâs seen me, my father will double and triple the guards on the city gates and bridges. Itâs a good thing we found the secret passage when we did.â
âWhere is it?â David asked.
âIt goes through the wall and under the covered bridge at Black Friars,â Isaac said. He was still bouncing around the room.
âThis might give us an advantage,â John said, thinking out loud.
âWhat do you mean?â Helena asked. âHow can being seen by someone who knows you be an advantage? Your father will flood the stretes with guards now that he knows for sure youâre here.â
âNot to mention Walden is still out there as well,â David added.
âYes,â John said. âBut theyâll all be looking for me in London. Weâll be far away in Warwickshire, which is the last place theyâll expect me to be.â
Andrew wagged his finger at John. âThe boyâs got a good point. Theyâll all be searching for him â and us â here. Weâll be safer up there than we are here.â
âAnd we can come and go in and out of the city without being seen. The gates and bridges always made me shiver.â Helena clapped her hands. âThis crazy idea might just work.â
âOkay, hereâs the plan,â Andrew said. âWeâll leave here before dawn and use the secret passage you just found to get into the city. Once weâre inside the wall, weâll break up into smaller groups like we often do. Iâll go with Helena, Abraham will go with David, and you two stay together. Weâll meet outside the Almshouses near Cripplegate.â
âCanât we just stay outside the walls and meet outside Cripplegate?â David asked. âThat way we wouldnât have to go through the city at all. Itâd be safer.â
âNot unless you want to swim across the Fleet,â Andrew replied. âI know I donât want to be anywhere near that nasty water. Who knows what terrible disease weâd die of if we swam through that.â
âI never thought of that,â David said. âIâd rather be caught by Walden.â
âWhat do we do when we get to Coventry?â Andrew turned his attentions to John.
