CHAPTER SIXTEEN

JESSE

Wyatt is waiting in the baked goods area of the servery as I hang up my apron later that night. I’m about to ask where River is when my twin answers before I ask. “He’s meeting us at the base of the stairs. Are you ready to roll?”

I don’t know if ready will ever describe me spending time with Floyd, but I try not to snark. If the man is genuinely trying to help, it would be petty and ungrateful to rag on him for it.

Hey, look at me, adulting!

“Sure. Why not.”

“Och,” Mora says, “Wait for the wee man. He wants to keep ye company, though he’s feeling as sick as a small hospital these days.”

I stop and wait for Catsanova to catch up. “What’s up, buddy?” He arrives at my feet and, for the first time in weeks, doesn’t figure-eight my ankles. He also doesn’t speak to me. I pick him up and nuzzle his fur, sensing his drained energy immediately. “You aren’t feeling good, are you?”

I carry him downstairs, and the wannabe vet assistant in me worries. What malady affects a magical cat? His coat is thick and shiny, and his turquoise eyes are bright, though not as focused and communicative as usual, and he’s still not talking.

When I feel like crud, I don’t necessarily want to chat, so maybe that’s not a relevant symptom.

I snuggle him into the crook of my arms and brush my cheek over his furry head. “I’ll look into it, beautiful boy. The first chance I get.”

I spot River’s purple mohawk as soon as we turn the corner of the second-floor landing. I love his look. I have since the first night I met him at the icebreaker. The sides of his head are shaved close with a wide ribbon of violet hair braided against his scalp. It runs from his forehead, down to his mid-back. The warm copper of his skin and the sharp cheekbones of his First Nations heritage round out the image.

He’s badass beautiful.

I still haven’t had a chance to talk to him about possibly jumping the line from besties to besties with benefits. Okay, so I’ve had multiple chances to talk to him, I just chickened out.

River’s face lights up when he sees us, and he gives us a wave. He’s jazzed about the extra training and about being more prepared to step in and defend Wyatt and me if needed. He’s got a natural need to protect and will be one helluva Magi Knight.

“Hey,” we all say at once.

The three of us fall into step and head down the last flights of stairs to the atrium.

“How was your shift?” River asks.

“It feels good to work and keep my foot to the pedal like at the bar back home.”

“Hopefully, with fewer drunks grabbing your ass,” Wyatt says.

I laugh and shift Catsanova in my arms so he’s more comfortable. “Yes, on both counts. Fewer drunks and I’m a guy here, so significantly less ass-grabbing.”

“Yeah,” Wyatt agrees. “Guys don’t grab other guys by the ass.
