“Four weeks until she has to go,” said Jasmine to Tom as they walked to school the next morning. “That means four weeks to persuade Mom and Dad that we should keep her.”

“I was looking up stuff about goats last night,” said Tom, “and it said they’re good to keep in a field with sheep because they eat weeds that sheep don’t eat, so they’re really helpful to farmers.”

“We need tons of facts like that,” said Jasmine, “to prove to them that she should stay.”

“Ooh,” said Tom, his eyes lighting up. “We should enter her in the agility class at the festival. That’s in three weeks. If she wins, your parents will be so proud that they’ll let you keep her.”

“She’ll definitely win,” said Jasmine. “She’ll be way better than all the dogs. And there’s never been a goat in the agility competition before.”

“Will they let you take her, though?”

Jasmine made a face. “Probably not. But we could enter her anyway.”

“Secretly? Won’t they get mad when they find out?”

“It’s not exactly a secret,” said Jasmine, “because we want them to find out when they see her in the show, don’t we? It’s more of a surprise than a secret. And everybody loves surprises.”
