' Nanotech in Europe

Infineon, formerly part of Siemens, has created the world's smallest carbon-nanotube-based transistor and is capable of competing with IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel in this new emerging area.

Siemens, the European equivalent of General Electric and the continent's leading supplier of electrical parts and electronic equipment, is investing over $7 billion in research and development annually and is devoting a good portion of that money to nanotechnology—primarily through its Center for Functional Polymers.

The Henkel Group, which is much like 3M, is another big investor in nanotech and is applying it to its diverse product line. Hoechst AG and Bayer are also producing various nanoparticles and fullerenes, while Merck, the large pharmaceutical company, has established a relationship with C Sixty (now part of Carbon Nanotechnologies, GlaxoSmithKline, and Flamel to pursue various nanotechnology-enhanced pharmaceutical applications.
