While Mark was visiting the Lagos bank we were interested in (see p. 95), Carlos had arrived early at the shareholders’ meeting of Nigeria’s second-largest brewery. He was reviewing his notes and planning to ask the kind of governance questions we usually ask at such meetings. He waved at a few acquaintances, representing other foreign investors. He knew most of them shared his concerns.

After the formal preliminaries had been completed, the meeting was thrown open for questions from the floor. ‘Show time,’ Carlos muttered to himself. He glanced at his notes and prepared to stand and say his piece. But, in fact, he and the other foreign investors remained seated throughout the rest of the proceedings.

‘A couple of local pension fund managers stood up and started asking the questions I was planning to ask,’ Carlos recalls:
