Les conventions collectives de travail, conclues entre un employeur ou un groupement d’employeurs, d’une part, et en principe une ou plusieurs organisation(s) syndicale(s), d’autre part, ont en revanche une portée normative, dans la mesure où elles sont obligatoires non pas seulement pour les parties signataires (employeurs ou syndicats), mais pour tous les salariés des entreprises affiliées aux organisations patronales signataires, que les salariés de ces entreprises soient ou non eux-mêmes syndiqués. Les conventions collectives nationales sont même très souvent rendues obligatoires dans toutes les entreprises par un arrêté dit d’extension du ministre du Travail.
