Can you identify turbulence before it occurs?

Timing

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.

(Ecclesiastes 3:1, NLT)

When you start your new venture—or even expand a part of your business—it can be very tempting to turn to social media and tweet or post about it. We live in the type of society where we think we need to seize the opportunity to get the message out as frequently and as quickly as possible if we want to penetrate the market and capture public attention.

But, I often suggest to entrepreneurs that they consider timing when making such announcements. I’m not talking about knowing what time the most potential clients are on social media and timing your posts to hit then (although that isn’t a bad strategy); but I think it is much more important to ensure that your venture has been tried and tested before launching a full blown marketing and promotional strategy. You don’t want to fail because you’ve focused more on promoting your venture than testing and improving the business itself. There’s almost nothing worse than having plenty of customers and a sub-par product still filled with bugs and errors.

Some entrepreneurs operate like someone who is in love, but they are really infatuated with the idea of being in love; the entrepreneur isn’t really passionate about the product she offers as much as she is with being an entrepreneur—and wanting to get the word out. Getting your name out in front of people does not make you a successful business owner.

You don’t want to crash and burn because you haven’t taken the time to ensure your product is ready for prime time. Just as good pilots know to warm up engines before taking off at full speed, wise entrepreneurs know to focus on their product and processes before promotion. Test-marketing, focus groups, beta groups are all ways to test the products and continue to work on the process before engaging large crowds. As the Bible says, for everything there is a season.
