They'll love me when I make us win against the Sulfur Dragons, Zed said to himself every time he fleetingly thought of apologizing to his teammates so that they would invite him to play cards or join the nightly conversations by the fireplace in their tower.

It was especially hard not to swallow his pride one night when Quincy rushed into the tower with the new cards from Athien and the Conquest of Terra that his mother had sent him by Kanglers Postal Service after Mrs. Marson had authorized the package.

“At last, I have all the Golden Generals!” he shouted, jumping up and down on the sofa.

Zed was dying to meet the generals whose feats he had heard so much about since his arrival in Thalas, even if it was just in cards. However, his pride was greater. He preferred to go out quietly and walk for a while in the woods to clear his head.

Although he walked for a long time, it didn’t work. He couldn't stop asking himself the same question that popped up every night before going to sleep, since his last meeting with Kali: why was he in danger if he showed off his skills with ergon, and what did Julius Morgan have to do with it?

In the forest, a thought made him shiver. For the first time, he saw black ergon issuing from himself as he remembered the envelope with Lenick Ackerson's name as the return address in the principal's office. Did they talk about me? An icy sensation crept up his back.

At that instant, it dawned on Zed that walking alone late at night in the woods was not a smart thing to do, much less when his life was in danger. The only thing that had made him forget that Ackerson was stalking him, according to what everyone said, was that Julius Morgan was the only one he feared and he would not dare set foot in a place where Julius ruled. Now, however, everything took on a new meaning. There was a strong likelihood that the two most powerful emgis would team up to take him down.

What if Ackerson has the cure for the white plague, and Director Morgan trades it for my life because he suspects I have the key he’s been looking for?

His theory seemed to make quite a bit of sense, which made the trees around him look like menacing monsters, pointing at him with their sharp claws.

I must not be paranoid, he said to himself. If Kali knew I was in danger, she wouldn't have left me alone in Savilles. He said that I am only in danger if someone finds out that I can control ergon, he tried to reassure himself.

Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, someone touched his back, and again he found himself inside a cloud of black ergon.

“It's me.” Kara's eyes shone like two moons in the middle of the night.

“Do you want to scare me to death?!” Zed felt his heart pounding in his ears.
