Chapter 6
A WIFEâS HEART
Choosing to Do Whatever Makes
My Husband Happy
I am in the audience at the Dr. Phil show every day, and I have been since it first aired four years ago. I absolutely love it; I wouldnât miss it for the world.
I love being there because this showâthe work my husband does in that timeâis his lifeâs passion. It is his calling and he has asked me to be there with him and for him. I love that he wants me there and I love that I can be there. Yes, there are plenty of other things I could do with my time, but none of them means more to me than being in the studio because I share Phillipâs passion for this important work. I absolutely love watching him work. He loves doing the show, and few things make me happier than watching him do what he loves to do. Over the last few years I have been able to contribute in small ways. Letâs face it: Dr. Phil could do with some fine-tuning of his feminine side now and again.
The Dr. Phil show isnât just Phillipâs job; itâs part of the fabric of our lives. Itâs the reason we decided to exchange the down-home familiarity of our old Texas existence for the comparatively fast-paced surroundings of our new one, and we negotiated the move the same way we did every other evolution in our marriage.
Itâs not every day your husband gets a chance to star in his own television show. And while I believed that doing the Dr. Phil show was a terrific opportunity for my husband, I also knew that there were other people to consider, especially Jordan. He was fifteen when the show became a real possibility and we knew that relocating from Dallas to Los Angeles would require a major adjustment on his partâone that might be difficult for a teenager to make. Jay had just graduated from college and was preparing to enter law school, so he was already on his own. But Jordan was still living with us and was part of a network of friendships and activities that he would have to abandon if we moved.
Phillip and I sat down and considered our options, which included saying no to the show and staying in Dallas; saying yes and moving the family to Los Angeles; or saying yes and having Phillip move to Los Angeles while Jordan and I stayed behind. Splitting up the family was out of the question, which left doing the show and moving, or turning it down and staying where we were. As much as Phillip wanted to do the show, we both agreed that this was a clear-cut case of putting family first; so we sat down with Jordan and said we were not about to make the move unless he convinced us he was behind it. It turned out that Jordan liked the idea of living in Los Angeles; he knew he would have some adjusting to do, but then, so would we all.
