Chapter 32

Saying goodbye to Crim and Jax before they went home in the opposite direction, we walked to Amethyst House broken and exhausted with Ghost trailing behind us.

“You shouldn’t have come, Ghost,” I said.

“I can’t just sit at home all the time knowing you might be in trouble. Even if you weren’t, it’s boring.”

“You could have been hurt. You could have been found out. What was that back there? Were you about to hulk out and go all demon on them? How could I keep you secret after that?”

“Maybe I don’t care.”

“What does that mean?”

We stopped and faced each other, eye to eye. “I'm not a house pet anymore, Silver. Too much has changed. I can’t go back to that.”

I couldn’t breathe. He didn't want me anymore? I couldn’t even keep a dog? I searched his deep, watery gaze and couldn’t deny, he wasn’t my pet husky anymore. He was so much more now. Even if he didn’t start that way, he was a person. Human if he wanted to be, and if it weren’t for me, it would have never happened. “I’m sorry, Ghost. I’m so sorry.”

“I’m not. And I still love you,” he said, reaching for me. I braced myself before clutching him, because I knew it’d be weird, but that was okay. I couldn't reject him. We hugged for a while and I tried to get used to the idea of Ghost as a half-demon, human friend.

When I pulled away, he looked down at his feet, as if waiting to see what I wanted him to do. I grimaced at that.

“Let’s just get home,” I said, and the three of us walked silently, side by side.

When we arrived, Mom and Ember were sitting up, awake in chairs in the family room, with Winter and Finch cuddled up on the couch. A blanket was draped over my little sister, but tucked under the fae. Dried tea cups littered the coffee table.

“What happened?” asked Ember.

“All hell broke loose,” I said, shuffling past her to drop onto the couch opposite my youngest sister and her boyfriend. Ghost hovered, unsure what to do with himself. “Just sit. Or whatever you want, Ghost.” He nodded but kept pacing around the living room, something he did a lot as a dog but was unnerving as a human.

They were watching the local newscaster describe the 'pandemonium' in the streets, which we knew was due to hundreds of witches being delirious with magic for the first time, but murks were confused and theories abounded.

“Have you had a nice vacation, Silver?” asked Ember.

“I have, Em, thanks,” I beamed at her.

She rolled her eyes but smiled. She was just teasing.

“It’s anarchy out there and we need to stop him, but… I ran into Ezra.” I gave Cait a pointed look.

She used the remote to flick the television off. “Oh good. She should be helpful.”

“Mom!" I yelled. "She said she was assigned to us?” Cait nodded. “She put a containment ward on the city so no one would know it existed?”

“As I said.
