WAGHMARE HELD DAILY meetings with his team, where they discussed the progress in the investigation. Deshmukh told Waghmare that the CCTV footage of the robber who had entered the building a day before the girl’s murder had been circulated among Mujawar’s contacts. ‘Sir, give it a day or two. It seems like he may have some criminal record. We should get some good news soon,’ Mujawar told Waghmare.

‘Mujawar, you cannot take two days for something that can be completed in a day. You have WhatsApp—how much time does it take to spread it among your network? Someone just has to identify him. In the footage, we can see that the robber has a slight limp on one side. That is such a giveaway. I need this guy by tomorrow. You realize there is a good chance he could be the guy we are looking for, right? I want to make this clear—there is no room for even a bit of complacency.’

‘Bane,’ he continued, ‘what is the update on the bill book?’

Bane knew he had an update that would interest Waghmare. ‘Sir, I spoke to the shopkeeper again, and he says he is sure he has the record of all the bill books over the past few years. But one of his employees who was present said that on entering the shop two days after the first murder, he had found some broken pieces of a tiles on the floor. He look around and observed that some of the tiles on the roof appeared to have been rearranged in a haphazard manner. He was scared that someone had entered the shop and stolen money, but there was nothing missing from the shop, so he didn’t bring it up with the shopkeeper. Of course, he did not think to check the bill books. It never occurred to him that someone might steal a bill book,’ Bane said with a look of self-importance.

‘See, Bane, I told you … everything right down to its logical conclusion. The killer stole the bill book from the shop. He knew he had left the bill there. It’s possible that he found it missing from his pocket. Or maybe he knew we had the bill. It was, however, not mentioned in the media—I checked. The only other probability,’ he said with pause, looking at Wagh, ‘is that the killer is somebody who knows exactly what clues we have.’

‘You know what to do next, Bane,’ Waghmare continued. ‘It is an important lead. We can assume that the killer was there near the shop on the night after the murder . Tell Mane about it. Check CCTV footage around that shop as well, but knowing how good he is with evading cameras, I am not sure how much we will find. But you have to find a way to locate the guy who entered the shop. Apart from Wagh, the rest of you can go.’

Wagh knew what information Waghmare wanted. ‘There is a constable, Pise, attached to the Nehru Nagar police station who lives in the police quarters where the body was found.
