Chapter 12

Jeremy

_________

I lick the wounds along the female human’s neck and stare into her brown, bloodshot eyes. I push her long, blonde hair behind her ears and feel my eyes start to glow. “Go home and forget about me.” I whisper and sigh as I watch her pick up her purse and jacket before leaving my home. Usually I would head straight downstairs to my feeders that I pay handsomely to live with me… But I was ravenous after leaving the Volkov estate and fed on the first human I found.

I just returned after having Mauve sign off on the new house in North Carolina and felt like I was intruding while waiting for her to finish her… date with one of the princes. I can barely hold back and contain myself when I’m near her. Her scent drives me senseless and her blood calls to me like no other. I groan as I rub my eyes and reprimand myself. She’s about to be bound to four princes whom she will be allowed to mate with. Have children with. I’m an ancient vampire, but my powers are a drop in the ocean compared to them.

Over the years we, Francis and me, forged a tentative friendship of sorts with the princes. We educated them, allowed them to read coven journals and a few grimoires, and told them about Harriet’s ‘lost’ granddaughter. We never mentioned her age or anything personal. Harriet never spent much time with them, she was busy commanding the coven to do everything her way.

As the years passed and she grew weaker, that’s when she started to change, becoming desperate.

I once asked her if she regrets not leaving any legacy for her own children and she cackled in my face. She detested how spoiled and appalling her children grew up to be. She was ecstatic when she was called upon to move back to Salem, away from her ‘cursed children’. She has never spoken of her mate from her human life, and no one asked. Too troubled of the consequences.

It was still a surprise all around that Kimberly was able to hold the coven for so long. She’s over a hundred years old now and ruled without her predecessor for about twenty years. The spirit witch before Kimberly, Alicia, returned her magic to the ‘gardens’ in the Underworld and lives there peacefully with her demon bound, supposedly. No one has seen her since she left the coven and I don’t buy it that she went to the Underworld. I still don’t understand why Lucifer placed a curse on their line, if he even did. It doesn’t add up.

Harriet was about a century older than Kimberly and didn’t have children until the supposed ‘curse’ took place after leaving the coven.

Maybe Mauve can piece it all together, eventually. She’s persistent.

I recline back in my leather chair and slide my phone out of my pocket and scroll through my emails. I have clients all throughout the state, but the majority of my business is here in Salem and tied up with the Volkov coven.
