Chapter Twelve

The next morning Hayden got up early and showered, having had a sleepless night. He dressed quickly, intending to go straight to Amber’s room to speak with her. The events of the previous evening had been going around and around in his mind, but he still couldn’t work out what he had done wrong. It was after he had kissed her that she’d become angry, but why? She hadn’t objected to him being intimate with her earlier in the evening and she had reciprocated the kiss.

He came out of his room, along the second-floor landing and took the stairs down to Amber’s floor. When he got to her door he hesitated for a few seconds then pulled himself together and knocked on the door.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Silence.

“Amber?”

He used his sensitive hearing to listen inside the room and it was quiet, so he opened the door a crack and said her name again through it. There was still no reply, so he opened it fully. She wasn’t there.

Valentino came down the stairs into the kitchen an hour later and found him sitting at the table alone with a coffee.

Vale went to pour himself a cup. “Any luck with Amber?”

Hayden sighed. “No. She’d already gone out when I got up this morning. And I was up at the crack of dawn.”

Vale came to sit across from him. “She will be out running. She exercises when she is mad.”

Hayden smiled. That didn’t surprise him. “I’ll just wait on her getting back.”

They started discussing the events of the previous evening. It was disappointing that they hadn’t found anything of interest at Glassmarsh Manor. They considered why else Angelique had been planning to meet the now-captured vampire John Alexander and his twin there. They must have been intending an attempt to extract information directly from Lord Glassmarsh himself—or worse, kidnap him and try to extract the information. They concluded that Valentino would feed this back to The Organization so that Mr. X could warn Glassmarsh, if needed.

Just then Hayden heard the front door open and Amber enter and go straight upstairs, clearly avoiding coming to speak to them.

Vale raised his eyebrows at Hayden. “On that note, I am going into the living room to make the call.” He got up from the table and nodded toward the stairs. “Good luck with that…” Then he smiled and left the room.

Hayden sighed and shook his head. “Thanks, bud,” he said under his breath. He heard Amber banging about upstairs. “I’m gonna need it.”

He waited, listening to the sound of the water running in her shower, then waited a bit longer after that to give her enough time to get toweled off and dressed. Then he scraped his chair back from the table and went upstairs, coming to a stop outside her door.

Why do I feel more nervous right now than when I’m on a mission?

He knocked on the door and waited. A moment passed then Amber opened it. She was gorgeous in loose-fitting jogging bottoms and a soft jersey top.
