Dive Deep: Unwrapping Your Gift

I want you, dear reader, to grab a pen and a piece of paper…or, if you’re anti-old school like me, open up a notepad on your smartphone.

Done? Awesome! Now I want you to carefully consider just a few questions regarding your unique, inextricable, God-given gifts, then write or type your answers:

I. What do you look forward to doing most?

Not five minutes after I returned home from a writers’ conference this past weekend, I opened up my laptop and began blogging. I’m constantly seeking out writing advice and pinning inspirational, albeit nerdy, quotes about writing on Pinterest. While I was running errands this morning, I kept telling myself to hurry so I could come home, pour a cup of coffee, and start writing the words your eyes are reading now. Why? Because I am passionate about this gift God’s given me. It’s one of the things I love most in life.

What about you? What can you hardly wait to do when you’re done running errands? What sort of conferences, church sermons, college courses, or work meetings fire you up to throw paint on a canvas, strum a new melody on your guitar, pen lyrics to a song, or start a quilting ministry like my friend Colleen who followed her heart and opened “Sew Thread Ink” last year?

Write what pops up from your heart into your head, and then ask yourself…

II. How can you use this gift to serve others for the Lord?

When I was a little girl, my mom and dad beamed with pride every time I handed them my silly scribbled short stories about fairies and elves, haunted forests, and enchanted realms. They were delighted to see how happy writing made me and how enthusiastic I became when I talked about the outlandish tales ever swirling ’round and ’round in my busy little head. But my parents grew even more excited by my talent when I expressed interest in using it to bless others through Christ-centered articles, blog posts, and books.

Our heavenly Father is much like our earthly parents, only He is immeasurably more delighted than they are when He watches us exercise the gifts He’s given us. And He beams brighter than the sun when we choose to carry our gifts out into the world to heal the hurting, guide the searching, and lift the broken with the eternal Light we harbor.

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.”

How can you begin using your gift to touch lives? Can you use your acting talent to serve on the drama team at church? Can you use your culinary skills to bake healthy meals for the busy, hard-pressed single mom down the street? Can you use your Martha Stewart–like poise and hospitality to host a get-together for a group of women who could use a time of fellowship with other believers?

You may be saying, But none of the things you mentioned will profit me financially.
