King Lamoni’s Father

Alma 20–22

King Lamoni wanted Ammon to meet his father, the old Lamanite king who ruled over all the land. But Ammon was warned not to go. The voice of the Lord told Ammon that King Lamoni’s father would try to kill him. Instead, Ammon was told that he should go to Middoni to free his brother and friends who were in prison. When King Lamoni asked Ammon how he knew they were in prison, Ammon explained that God had told him.

King Lamoni wanted to go with Ammon to Middoni. He told Ammon that the king over Middoni was a friend of his, and he could plead with him to free Ammon’s brother and friends. King Lamoni asked his servants to prepare his horses and chariots, and they left for Middoni together.

While King Lamoni and Ammon were traveling, they ran into King Lamoni’s father. He was upset with his son and asked why he had not come to his great feast. He also wondered why he was traveling with one of their enemies, a Nephite. King Lamoni tried to tell his father that Ammon was his friend, and he tried to explain why he had not come to the feast, but his father was angry with him and commanded him to kill Ammon.

King Lamoni refused to slay his new friend, Ammon. King Lamoni’s father became so angry that he drew his sword to kill his own son, but Ammon stopped him. King Lamoni’s father then turned his anger on Ammon and tried to kill him, but Ammon resisted him and wounded the old king’s arm. When King Lamoni’s father realized that Ammon could kill him, he pleaded for his life. He promised that if Ammon would spare his life, he would give him whatever he asked, even half of his kingdom.

Ammon released the old king and asked him only to free his brother and friends in Middoni and allow Lamoni to keep his kingdom, the land of Ishmael. When the old king saw that Ammon did not want to destroy him, he rejoiced. King Lamoni’s father was astonished by Ammon’s great love for his son. He allowed Lamoni to keep his kingdom, promising not to rule over him anymore. He also agreed to free Ammon’s brother and friends who were in prison and even invited them to come and see him in the land of Nephi.
