Tricking her? No. Someone had tried to fucking kill her, and that was it. I was seconds away from telling her, showing her just how wrong she was, but I kept my mouth shut. She was shivering, her face white like the one of a corpse, her plump lips purple. The memory of what had happed just hours earlier hit me like a punch: the way she’d tried attacking to prove herself, the way she’d straddled me, how her lips had accidently touched mine in what couldn’t even be considered a kiss. And yet. It fucking haunted me. I hadn’t stopped thinking about it for a second. It had made me want to pry her lips open and tongue-fuck that pretty mouth, push her down on the floor again and—

Stop. It’s not the fucking time.

And I wasn’t supposed to want her. I wasn’t supposed to care.

She was soaked to the bone. Terrified. Her breath was ragged.

The sight stirred some sense of compassion deep inside me, but I was quick to shove it back down. If her ramblings were true, she’d been fucking dumb—not fit for this godforsaken place, just like I’d been saying from the very beginning. Where were her instincts? Her self-preservation? Her fucking brain?

“Can you… Can you tone it down a little?” she asked in a thin voice. She looked up at the sky, blinking fast as rain fell into her eyes, and then back down at me. “It feels like the sky is going to crack in two.”

Almost as if aware of her words, my magic inflated, feeding some more energy to the thunderstorm. As lighting struck, filling the night sky with incandescent light, my magic was fed right back. I’d never get used to the feeling. The energy coursing through my veins was better than anything else I’d ever tried—it made me feel high, powerful, undefeatable. I didn’t want to tone it down. I wanted to let out all of the rage and fear and offer them to the storm, basking in that illusion of freedom that wouldn’t last long enough. It never did.

Instead, I grabbed Violet’s elbow and dragged her back, to the other end of the roof and then into the trapdoor that led us to the spiral staircase. It was dark and full of dust, but at least it was fucking dry.

“You’re going to tell me what happened” I said to her, placing my hands on both handrails so that she couldn’t escape. Not before telling me what the fuck was going on. “Be specific, Princess, or you’re not fucking leaving.”

She stood two steps above me, but she was still shorter. She looked even more defenseless and confused than she’d had in the rain.

Her hair dripped water on the stone, the sound echoing in the silence along with her short breath; when she finally spoke, her voice was so weak and low it almost got lost in the noise. “I found a note in my locker, back in the changing room.
