ANGELS:

WHAT KIND OF BEINGS?

Are angels a reality? Do they have a shape? Are they visible? What is their task? What is their relationship to mankind, to this world? Can intelligent people really believe that they exist? Heathen philosophers, such as, among others, Socrates and Plato, speak of good spiritual beings, but we should preferably keep to what God says in His Word.

Let us look in the Bible for the answers. In the letter to the Hebrews we read a lot about what angels are not. Read it for yourself, especially in the first chapter. In Colossians 1:16 Paul writes that angels were created by God, by Him and for Him. Angels have their own language; read 1 Corinthians 13. Jude, verse 6, writes of a place where they live.

When I read of what the angels did in the time that the Bible was written, they were real pacesetters. “Hurry up!” is their word. “Get up and go!” Peter, Gideon, Joseph, Philip—it was always the same. When the baby Jesus was in danger, they said to Joseph, “Go to Egypt as soon as possible—hurry up!”

When people saw angels, they looked like young men, never like beautiful women and never with wings. Cherubs have wings, but they are actually different heavenly creatures than the angels. Perhaps they are visible, but our eyes cannot see them because there are light waves which we cannot distinguish. People can only see angels if the Lord performs a miracle, if He considers it necessary. Sometimes animals can distinguish them better. Balaam's donkey saw the angel before his master saw him.

I had a wonderful experience in South Africa. The program was much too full, but the work was going extremely well. But one day I had five meetings and I was so glad to leave for home at 9:30 p.m. Then they told me that I still had a sixth meeting to go, but I refused. Their disappointment was so great that I understood that I had to go. “It's a very important party at a prestigious club,” they told me. “They have advertised widely saying that you will be speaking. There are souls to be won; many of the guests have never heard the gospel.”

So I went, but I felt absolutely exhausted. When I started to speak, I suddenly felt my strength returning. The Lord gave me a powerful, joyful message.

Afterwards a young man came up to me and asked, “Was it difficult to speak to us?”

“Why?” I asked.

“The whole time you were speaking, I saw a large angel standing behind you. He held his hand above your head as if he were protecting you.”

I asked a friend who was there, “Did you see anything while I was speaking?”

“Yes, there was a light behind you all the time you were speaking.”

And someone else said, “You looked so tired, but suddenly all the weariness was gone and you spoke so powerfully.”

That was a lovely experience.

Angels have superhuman power. They are immune to heat and fire. Samson's father, Manoah, saw an angel coming out of the fire from the altar (Judges 13:19–20).
