Chapter 15

My New Roommate

A fter all those days in the hospital we were both so glad to be home. I was excited to sleep in my own bed. Normally, we walked down the hall and parted ways with a hug and a kiss—me to my bedroom, and Christina to hers. Something had changed. Christina needed the comfort and support of being next to me and asked if she could sleep in my room. We were roommates for the first time ever.

Getting out of my own comfortable bed the next morning I thought it felt so good to be home. I dressed in all but my shoes, walked from the bedroom to the kitchen, and passed the stack of get-well cards Christina brought home with her from the hospital. I picked them up and looked around. Where would Christina be able to see these all day ? I thought. Each card brought her joy, and she loved to gaze at them and watch them grow daily. While she was in the hospital, she received cards in the mail daily at our home and at her dad’s house. Mike had come by the hospital every day with cards in hand. Christina read each word, examined each picture, and asked about each person who sent the card. They truly meant a lot to her. I decided to display them on the top of the TV console where she could see them from any angle of the living room. There were so many, I could barely display them all. Christina had impacted so many with her love and her prayers, it was incredible to see the love pouring in from everyone she had touched.

Later that same afternoon, I went out to the mailbox and was glad to see continued support for my daughter in the form of a card.

“Christina, it looks like you received more get-well cards in the mail today,” I said, coming into the house.

I handed the new cards to my daughter who opened and read each message carefully. After she was done, I picked up the cards to display them with the others. There was no more room on the crowded TV console where I had carefully placed each card.

“Where are we going to put the new ones?” Christina said.

Looking around, I came up with a solution. I walked over to the kitchen, opened a drawer, and pulled out some push pins.

“We are going to start papering the living room wall with them,” I said.

Christina smiled, and said, “P erfect!”

She watched as I began pinning the cards on the wall. She could see them much better now and liked this solution. The cards covered two-thirds of the living room wall. I had to get a ladder to hang them all.

The next day, a hospice nurse came to our home for their first consultation. Christina didn’t understand why she had to have a nurse come see her at home. She had never experienced this before. She had been in the hospital earlier
