CHAPTER 20

“I’ll bring you a check first thing.”

Brock narrowed his eyes at Ginnifer, making his disgust known without saying a word. He snatched up his wife by the arm and pulled her along after him, treating her like a wayward child and having no shame about it.

“Sorry, Erika,” Ginnifer said as they left the police station.

“Bye, Erika.”

Brock whirled around with such a fierce expression Will wouldn’t dare flirt with his wife again. He was so angry it wouldn’t take much to push him over the edge and act with uncharacteristic abandon.

They were inside the car before Erika tried to explain. “Brock, I—”

He raised a finger in her direction, stopping her cold. He pulled out of the parking lot with enough vigor to make several police officers watch them suspiciously. He recalled every tiny thing he loved about Erika on the drive home, hoping to cool his anger, but getting a call first thing Saturday morning from your wife asking you to bail her and her friends out of jail was enough to piss even him off.

After achieving his first erection since the surgery, he’d planned a romantic evening with Erika. Instead, the candles in the guest bedroom remained unlit and the roses wilted while she jotted off to be with Ginnifer—and Ginnifer’s two men friends. If he’d known Will and Rhon were going, he wouldn’t have allowed Erika to go. He’d been stunned when she announced she was going out for the evening, ruining his plans. He didn’t fail to notice she never mentioned the men tagging along, which raised another crop of questions in Brock’s insecure mind. Staring down into Erika’s innocent face now, he felt like a wicked stepparent ready to punish his charge…until she opened her mouth.

“I’m going to take a quick shower, and then I’m going to get some sleep. Don’t even think about chastising me like I’m a child.”

He blinked twice, shaking his head with the gusto of a cartoon character. “What did you just say to me?” His voice was so low he didn’t think Erika had heard him when she turned her back and walked away.

“I went out with my friends. I had a good time. It got a little out of hand at the golf course, but we’re going to use our winnings to pay for the repairs.”

He followed her into the bathroom, having to raise his voice to be heard over the spray of the shower beating the tiles. “You don’t talk to me this way. You never speak to me like this.”

She began to disrobe. “Brock, I’m tired.”

Was she dismissing him? “You stayed out all night—without calling. You never answered your cell. When I finally hear from you, it’s a call to bail you out of jail. I deserve an explanation.”

“And I gave you one.” She stepped out of her skirt, momentarily distracting him with the firm shapeliness of her thighs.

“What is going on in your head? This isn’t like you. None of it—staying out all night, the attitude—tell me what’s going on.
