An hour later, Amber stood in a private side room, wrestling with conflicting emotions.

Martin’s directions had been very clear. As soon as the press had been dealt with and make-up applied, Elyse and Amber had work to do. Elyse had been sent off to help with the lighting—the festival had their own photographers and didn’t want any assistance. And Amber had been dispatched to the side room to get ready for the ritual.

They hadn’t had a lot of time to do make-up once the press had finished with them. Fortunately Amber had had time to fully plan it out with Elyse on the bus. Elyse had handled Max’s demon make-up and Nate’s cheek bubbles while Amber had dealt with Eric’s snowflakes and, of course, Cassian’s half-mask. To her, at least, they had looked great. She could only hope they looked as good on stage.

Then—this.

How Martin had explained this to Darknights she had no idea. Under usual circumstances she wouldn’t have expected a last-minute band doing an afternoon set to get much more than a few bottles of water. But somehow they had been found a separate, lockable room to do this in.

And Harley was on her way.

So much time had passed since she’d last seen her. Since the betrayal.

In a way she had blamed herself. If she had attended a different university, one where members of her family weren’t well known, it might never have happened. But then she wouldn’t have been with Elyse, and she had wanted to study with her best friend.

And she had had no way of knowing that Brad, her ex, had known Harley and the rest of her family. Known their reputation.

Because Harley was a virgin, and saving herself until marriage.

Their parents had encouraged this all their lives. Amber had gone along with it initially, but after discovering she had a boyfriend at the age of eighteen, there had been a blazing argument and Amber had refused to discuss it with them again. Her body, her choice. If Harley and her other sisters chose to stay pure, that was up to them.

She had met Brad close to the end of her final year at university. Blond, cute, glinting green eyes. She had had no reason to suspect anything.

Until she had been in the bathroom after their first time together and overheard him on the phone to his friend. Bragging about how he had deflowered one of the Blake virgins.

Then his sudden shock and anger when his friend had told him he’d chosen the wrong one.

He’d chosen the only one who wasn’t a virgin.

There had been shouting, there had been swearing. At one point he had called her a ‘worthless whore’. She had left, hoping to avoid him for the rest of her time at university, sure that he would want the same thing.

But his friends had told everyone, and it had been a nightmare. Everybody knew the story—Amber Blake, the virgin who wasn’t.

She hadn’t told her parents. She’d known what they would say.
