Chapter Fifteen

Cassie

“Well, it’s definitely broken,” Dr. Roy said, his back to us as he studied Hux’s x-rays.

They’d relocated to an exam room, and I invited myself to join. I didn’t care what the doctor thought. I wasn’t leaving his side until I knew he was okay.

“Is it just his leg that’s broken?” I asked.

Hux turned to look at me, but I ignored him as I listened to the doctor.

“Well, it looks like his pelvis was also fractured, but it’s almost healed by now. Thankfully, it didn’t need to be set.”

My stomach churned as I realized I might have gotten him here too late. “What about the leg? Do you need to set that?”

The doctor sighed. “Yeah, it’s fractured in a few places, but the breaks aren’t clean. We have to align the bone before it starts to mend.”

I squeezed my clammy fingers into tight fists as I imagined how much that was going to hurt. Even now, it was like I could feel his pain in my own leg. Hux picked up my hand and stroked the back with his thumb.

“Let’s get it over with,” he said, his tone still somehow nonchalant.

The doctor nodded and turned to one of his drawers as someone started banging on the front door.

“That’s probably Bea,” Hux said, his jaw clenched. “Cass, why don’t you go let her in while the doc fixes my leg?”

I shook my head and gripped his hand. “No. I want to be here for you.”

“And I don’t want you to see me scream like a little bitch,” he shot back.

My lips twitched with a smile despite the knots in my belly.

“Please,” he said, his voice serious for a change. “Go get the door, so I don’t have to worry about looking cool in front of you.”

I rolled my eyes and snorted. “Is cool what you’ve been going for all this time?” I said as I pulled away from him. The last thing I wanted to do was leave, but it was clear he didn’t want me around for this part, and the least I could do was honor his wishes.

Hux narrowed his eyes as I stood. “Are you implying I’m not cool?”

I shrugged as I made it to the door. “I’m not sure that’s the word I’d use.”

“What fucking word would you use then?” he asked, his voice getting louder.

A laugh burst out of me before I shot him a look over my shoulder. “I’ll get back to you,” I said before I slipped through the door.

Hux was still grumbling as I closed it behind me, and I nodded. Hopefully, he’d be focused on that and not the pain he was about to endure.

I hurried through Dr. Roy’s house and over to the front door to look through the peephole. When I saw Bea standing there with half a dozen big werewolves, I hurried to let them in.

“Where’s Hux? What the fuck happened today?” Bea barked as she burst inside.

“He’s in the back getting his leg set with the doctor,” I said as more people streamed into the house behind her.
