Chapter 8

“I have a request for a meeting, sir. Her name is Slone Morris.” Ben looked at his secretary. He hated the fact that he’d had to hire a male to do the job, but the country being what is was made it difficult for a man, even a married one, to have any fun anymore.

“And that’s supposed to blow wind up my skirt why?” Allen Wagner looked confused. “Why should this woman want a meeting with me, and why on earth should I do it?”

Mother fuck, it was getting harder and harder to get a person working for you who could get a fucking joke once in a while. This idiot, his fourth in as many years, was as dumb as a fucking post.

“You don’t know who Slone Morris is?” He sounded incredulous, which pissed Ben off. He was Ben K. Conklin, for Christ’s sake…the mayor of this little burg that had been voted as having the lowest crime rate every year since he’d taken office. And, of course, he was going to keep it that way even if he had to continue burying the ass-wipes in his backyard.

“As a matter of fact, I don’t have a clue. Is she some rock star that wants to come here and hide out while she dries her ass out? Maybe some drug lord that wants to come here for the peace and quiet? Why the fuck don’t you just tell me who she is and then I can make an intelligent decision on whether or not I want to see her?”

Wagner laid a file on his desk and stood there waiting. Ben was going to kill this little shit. When he opened the file, there was a cover of one of those “who’s the richest” kind of things. He glanced it over before turning to the next page. There he saw the name Morris/Giles. Ben looked up at Wagner.

“This her?” He nodded. “What the hell does she want with me?” Ben continued to look through the papers and every article claimed that she was the richest—not just one of the richest—woman in all the world. He found one that reported that she was worth millions, another billions, and a few that stated that her worth was incalculable. Whatever the hell that meant.

“She said she would like to set up a meeting with you as soon as possible. Something about funding and land development. Plus, she would like to set up a meeting with the community as well.” Ben went back to one of the articles that said she had invested several million dollars in a land project that gave one small town a revenue of over eighty million over a ten-year period. More than his little town had ever made since someone had plopped the first house in the dirt.

“Make it happen as soon as she can get here.” Wagner nodded and started away, and Ben called him back. “Clear my calendar for the entire day and set up a lunch and dinner at that new place on Tenth.
