Training

As in other complex tasks, operator training can be vital. Training can influence the quality of the task’s execution, but also improve communication between the crew and the information customers. Two main points were raised in the discussions:

1. Should the operator’s main training focus on operating the system or, alternatively, should training focus on acquiring other military skills such as marksmanship or infantry? Most interviewees thought that UAV operation can be the soldier’s secondary training, but only on the simple operational tasks. In their collective opinion, it is essential to specifically train for UAV operation.

2. Basic training should be twofold and include training on how to operate the system (aviation basics, software, and hardware operating), and training on how to conduct a mission (the tactical and strategic elements of the mission, including observation, photo interpretation, and situation analysis).
