Pier V was the farthest east of the deep piers in the river. A crane stationed on a barge next to the pier location lifted and positioned the pieces of the construction forms. In this photograph, the timber falsework and steel shell are in place, and the contractor is placing the forms for the wells of the caisson. Additional forms can be seen on the barge adjacent to the crane barge. (New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.)

According to the American Bridge Company, contractor for the superstructure of the main bridge, it fabricated and erected a 1,850-foot cantilevered truss over the Mississippi River. The three-span cantilever unit consisted of two 529-foot anchor arms and a 790-foot main span consisting of two 145-foot cantilever arms and a 500-foot suspended span. The truss was constructed by the balanced cantilever method, work progressing in both directions from both piers. An additional 528-foot simple, through truss span flanked the New Orleans side of the main cantilever unit. The American Bridge Company constructed this simple span by cantilevering via a temporary tie to the cantilever unit. (New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.)
