Maura was at a conference in Manhattan all week and they planned for Jane to meet up with her Friday evening so they could spend the weekend in New York City together. Jane managed to finagle her way into leaving work a little earlier than planned, so she was able to catch an earlier train.

Maura was supposed to text Jane when she was done for the day so they could figure out where to meet. Jane was already sitting at a table in the hotel bar and restaurant by the time she heard from Maura. But she texted Maura back that her train had just arrived and she'd meet her soon at the hotel bar, knowing that Maura always liked to get a glass of wine after work on Friday.

As soon as Maura sat down on a stool at the bar, a glass of Chardonnay was placed in front of her. As Jane had arranged, the bartender didn't say anything but nodded slightly in Jane's direction. Maura looked in the direction of his nod and smiled at seeing Jane sitting there. Jane knew that Maura would know that it was her choice now, to come sit with Jane or stay at the bar and continue the game. Maura stayed at the bar.

During her time sitting at the bar, several men came and talked to Maura. Jane would never get over how forward people could be with Maura. All the guys found a way to touch her, just on the hand or arm. She still didn't know how Maura could stand dealing with that all the time. Maura was so open and willing to engage in conversation with anyone. Immersion therapy maybe worked a little too well, Jane thought to herself.

Jane watched Maura typing on her phone and then her own phone buzzed. Maura sent her a text that said: "You might think the wedding ring would turn guys away. But they leave once I tell them I'm married to a cop."

Damn right you're married to a cop, Jane thought. She tried to picture Maura being with any of the guys who were hitting on her. It just didn't seem feasible. Jane couldn't describe the connection she and Maura had but she knew it was there almost from the first time they met. It just took time and Jane almost getting killed for them to do something about it.

When Maura finished her second glass of wine she walked over to Jane's table and sat down. "You were watching me," Maura said.

"Did it bother you?"

"No. I liked it. Are you married?" Maura asked, indicated Jane's ring.

This was the part of the game that Jane always struggled with. She always fumbled with what she should be saying. "Oh, um, yes."

"And where does your wife think you are?"

"Uh, work.
